Studio Brief 2; Start of branding

In our group, we have now started the branding of our brief. We are to brand a film festival which promotes the screening of the films that were recommended to each group last week; The other side of hope, Kids, How to draw a bunny, We live in public, Weekend, Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory, Her and Chefs table. The films were recommended by the designers that we interviewed.

The film festival is created to inspire young graphic designers and artists through films recommended by professional artist's in the industry. We renamed the initial festival name which is "Film Festival for Young Graphic Designers". In order to rename the festival, we needed to come up with ideas and topics that are appropriate.

We started by writing down words and topics that relate to the film festival (personality characteristics) we then narrowed these ideas down to the top few. In the end, we decided that the film festival should be split into two; personality and aesthetic. The personality will be quirky, fun and energetic and the aesthetic will be minimal and sleek.



In order to come up with an appropriate name for the film series, we thought about the purpose and essence of it, in terms of themes. In conclusion, we decided on the name 'Overlay' this came from the idea of the random contrasting selection of films; none of the 8 films linked together or had similar themes. Also, because of the combination of the minimal aesthetic with the quirky personality; overlaying them.

                                    

Furthermore, after deciding on the name for the Film Festival we begun to generate ideas for a logotype design. We decided to go with the idea of combining to shapes together to represent the name 'Overlay' and to also communicate the abstract but minimal aesthetic.  The shapes that we chose were a square and a circle. Also, the square and circle can represent the idea of a camera and a lens used for filming.

We decided that we will each experiment with logo ideas tonight using the idea of the square and circle. We will then bring them together for a small critique tomorrow morning to allow us narrow it down to one design.

                                   

Some of us also started to plan out and experiment with colour schemes and design ideas for the logotype. We decided that bright and bold contrasting colours are most appropriate for our quirky and fun theme for the Film Festival.



   

We will also each research into different themes and design ideas to use in order to brand the Film Festival. We have decided that each person will research something different tonight to make the process quicker and more efficient. We have also made a timeplan for the week so we can manage our time well (not finished)
