Skype Interviews

Today we got the chance in our groups to interview our given designers that we have been researching into using our 5 final questions. I found it extremely useful to watch the interviews of the other groups as well as interviewing our given designers (From Form) as it allowed me to see how different designers work; their journey to where they are now, the techniques they use, if they work in a certain style, what its like working for a company compared to freelance, how to make your work different and a lot more.

Stone Twins
-If you follow trends, you'll just be like everyone else (talking about logos in particular) needs to be appropriate for what its for
-It was a lot different for him at art school; had to draw almost everything, physically go and find imagery instead of just googling everything, go to libraries, shops, etc
-When you leave art school, you often work in advertising; opinions and advice is really important when working as a team
-Travelling is good; Ireland was too behind which is why they moved to Holland, more opportunities for you if you move around and explore
-Recommended movie; Charlie and the chocolate factory; all of the imagination, open mindedness is inspiring.
-"Don't need designers to make websites"- what makes YOU different?

Luke Powell/Pentagram:
-Studied at Central St Martins
-Interest in trying all different types of media; gives them a bigger base set for what they are designing for.  Stay openminded
-Had a studio for 10 years before joining Pentagram
-Recommended film; kids. Follows a group of skateboarders in New York, films how their lives fall apart
-Always did everything themselves before Pentagram; more conceptual development now, not as crafty as it used to be
-Experiment!!!
-Inspiration from music; album covers, designs, logos etc. Huge early influence

From Form (our interview)
-Try out as much as possible, PLAY
-Film: The other side of hope by Aki Kaurismaki, they love the set design in it
-When they started out, they didn't work together so much
-When they first collaborated they realised they worked well together so they just continued and now here they are
-Since they're both working on the same projects, its hard not to talk about work all the same in their personal lives, they used to try and stop it but now they let it flow
-Her background is interior, he's more into story lines; makes a good combination!
-Sometimes they'll work separately away from each other, working together 24/7 at home can tire you out, this is one of their weaknesses as a duo
-Sometimes ideas pop up in random, try them out!
-Sharing ideas straight away means they can start working on it straight after discussing to see if it works
-Always try to make the project your own; add your own touches and personality into it
-Always try and challenge themselves for new projects so they get a different, new outcome everytime
-They tried working as a 3 once but found that they were better as a duo
-How they got involved with Halal; Always noticed their great time sequences within their work, they then visited Halal and slowly got into it. From Foam designed a title and poster design for a festival through that... Halal always saw them as just graphic designers so when they saw their film work, they were extremely impressed
