Evaluation

Overall, I really enjoyed this brief. The most fun part was creating the ticket designs and the stickers; creating the ticket designs were extremely successful l as mine and Brylles working styles and aesthetics linked well together. My designs were most illustrative and loose, where as her designs were more crisp and clean; once the two aesthetics were put together, we achieved a design that was both playful and expressive as well as professional and structured at the same time. At the start of the brief, as a group we decided that the film festival branding should be split into two styles; the personality and the aesthetic. The personality to be quirky, fun and energetic and the aesthetic to be minimal and sleek, this was represented well through the ticket designs as well as the designs created by the rest of the group.

I felt that as a group, most of us all had equal roles throughout the project which helped to give the branding a healthy structure as well as managing our time well. We each had tasks to do either individually or in two’s; ticket designers, popcorn designer, screen printers, each creating logo designs, design board creator etc. I felt that we all came up with some great ideas to start off with which helped us narrow our ideas down to a few to actually develop. We also created rules to use throughout the branding designs in order to link each element together; the colour scheme of red, yellow and orange, the main shapes being a square and a circle and sticking to the typeface Futura. However, there were a couple of group members that did not contribute as much as the rest of us, in terms of attendance and compromise. I felt that it was hard to explain ideas to the members that weren’t present as often as the rest of us, this meant that they weren’t up to date with what we were designing as well as not being able to comprise with our ideas, causing disagreements. Furthermore, three of the group members were not present during the presentation day either which made the presentation process harder as the people that were present had to talk about the elements that they hadn’t designed.

Also, I found the interview with From Form extremely useful and helpful. It allowed me to see how you would go about contacting designers in the real world, as well as hugely being a huge inspiration to me. It was great practice for future interviews and discussions with other designers.

In conclusion, I feel that the designs we created for the branding of the Overlay Film Festival worked extremely well, aesthetically and in terms of concept and development. Our designs all linked together well and communicated the Festival in a fun and vibrant way; perfect for the target audience of young students. However, we could have had a better outcome if our group was stronger in terms of attendance and listening to each others ideas more, also I think that the end presentation did not show the designs in the best light; the final designs could have been shown on a larger scale compared to the images of the development work, also we could of stuck to a simple grid system throughout the presentation instead of overcrowding the slides .

Presentation feedback

Today we presented our ideas for the Overlay Film Festival as a group to the rest of the class in order to gain some feedback on what worked well and how we could improve, as well as practicing our presentation skills. It was also useful to watch the other groups present as I got to see what didn't work well in other groups' work as well as being able to see what did work well so that I could generate some ideas for future presentations.

Throughout the presentation, we received a helpful amount of feedback:

  • When using other peoples work/sketches, make sure you credit them
  • Think about the background colours of the slides; some the background colours clashed with the colours of the images - We had slides different colours depending on which group member is going to talk about the slide (e.g. I had the blue slides) I agree to an extent, some of the colours could have been less bright.
  • The colour scheme works well (Red, Yellow, Orange)
  • Think carefully about the layout of the presentation, cant let the layout effect the work; needs to be presented so that the work is shown in the best way (scale, proportion etc) - I agree with this, images of final pieces could have been displayed larger instead of the same size as the rest.
  • Have music playing in the videos - Didn't want it to become too distracting, also was hard to find one sound to link all the movies as they were all so different
  • The video of the hand cut illustrations for each movie could of been filmed cleaner and more crisp; use a tripod - We purposely kept it rough and quick for a more playful effect

Further Branding Development

As a group we have continued to each work on certain elements of branding for the Film Festival in order to work quicker and easily. Me and Brylle continued to work on ticket designs and then Brylle developed the final designs of our two ideas combined, I also worked on stickers, Alex worked on design boards, Jake worked on a booklet and social media, Josh worked on popcorn boxes, Lee worked on wristbands and lanyards, Selina worked on mockup designs and Cara created the final presentation.

Social media; For social media, we decided to create an Instagram account for the Film Festival (@overlayfilmfestival) for a way of promoting and advertising. The account consists of short clips and gifs that we have created as a group as well as rough sketches and final designs.

Popcorn box; The popcorn box was uses the same shapes as the final logo design; circle and rectangle. This works extremely well as it is clear to see the link between the two. It uses the colours red and yellow to keep the colour scheme consistent throughout.

Wristbands and lanyards; The lanyards and wrist bands will be given to each student upon arrival for entry into the Festival, they are an extremely effective way to advertise and brand the festival as they are worn which means they'll attract more students to take part in the festival. They stick to the colour scheme of red, yellow and orange and use the typeface Futura.

Design boards (one example); We have created design boards in order to show the journey of how we branded the Film Festival from start to finish, it is important to justify each design decision to reach a successful outcome.

Mock-ups; Mock ups have been created as extra ways of branding the festival; e.g. event staff t-shirts, tote bags, cups etc.

Creating the stickers

As me and Brylle have created and finished the final ticket designs, I have had time to create another interactive element for the Overlay Film Festival. I had a list of ideas for things I could create; badges/pins, cups, goody bags and stickers, I chose to create stickers.

The design for the stickers was originally going to be used as the 2 in 1 ticket and coaster design for the coaster, however I felt that it would work better as a sticker because of the illustrative aesthetic of it. Also, the ticket design sticks to the original colour palette of yellow, red and orange, however for the sticker design I chose to explore more colours (rainbow and contrasts) for a more playful effect.

The design is based on the idea of repetition and repeated pattern created through using the original logo design of the overlaid square and circle. I have also added an offset outline to the design to create a hand drawn aesthetic.

The stickers will be used as extra interactive merchandise and as freebies for the students when entering the Film Festival to take home and use. The stickers can also be stuck onto the other elements that we have created in order to have another clear link of everything throughout; on the popcorn bags, tickets and the lanyards. They are also great for a way of advertising the Film Festival as they include the logo design.

Creating stickers was also a good experience for me as I have never created stickers before. I will now feel confident creating and printing sticker designs without too much help in the future, I found the process extremely fun.

Final Ticket Design

Today me and Brylle finished the final ticket design for the Overlay Film Festival. We narrowed our ideas down into one design by combining our best design each. In order to decide which designs worked best, we received a lot of feedback and suggestions off the group. Below are the two designs that we combined into one.

This is the final ticket design (below) of mine and Brylles two designs combined. We used the shape of the original logo for the ticket; the circle and square, however we had to extend the circle to a rectangle in order to fit more information on. We stuck with the colour scheme of red, yellow and orange as it ties in best with all of the other elements that we have created; it keeps the branding professional and consistent throughout. The three colours are very bright, fun and vibrant which communicates the concept of the festival.

The circle part can be ripped off and used as a coaster for putting your drinks on when watching the films, as well as a freebie to take home. The back of the coaster has been kept as a simple illustration which includes the logo.

The ticket includes all the vital information about the Overlay Film Festival; the name, logo, slogan, location, times, dates, names of all the films and a barcode for scanning in upon arrival.

Ticket Designs

Today I have started to create my 2 in 1 ticket and coaster designs for the Film Festival ('Overlay'). I have stuck with the idea of the circle as it works well best for a coaster and also relates to the circular shapes within the logo design.

For the back (coaster) design I have experimented with a more illustrative approach; repeated pattern, overlays, shape, bold colour and scale. I used the original colour scheme of red, yellow and orange but also experimented with a mixture of colours to develop the design and for a bolder and playful effect. The front (ticket) includes all the vital information about the festival; the title, logo, location, times, dates and barcode.

I have experimented with scale and layout thoroughly through my designs. I have used the typeface 'Futura' for the information on the ticket as I feel that it relates well with the aesthetic of our designs as it is symmetrical and geometric. The typeface is slick, clean and professional. I have also played around with adding outlines and overlays onto the original logo design for a more illustrative effect for the coaster, as well as for general development and to see if it needs more tweaking.

These are my favourite three designs. The first one sticks to the original colour palette and original logo designs; more classic. The second one explores more colours and the idea of repeated pattern and shape; abstract and bold. For the last one I experimented with the idea of opacity and background imagery; layering.

Ticket Branding

In order to equally divide what tasks each person is doing in terms of re-branding the Film Festival, we have assigned 1-2 people to work on a different element. Jake and Selina are working on an advertising booklet and video clips, Alex is working on design boards, Me and Brylle are working on ticket designs which will also be used as coasters, Cara is working on cups for the coasters as well as screen prints and Josh is working on popcorn bags as well as screen printing with Cara.

Me and Brylle have now started to experiment with ticket ideas. I have made a list of things the ticket needs to include in order to make it easier for us; The logo, barcode, location, time, dates, title of the Film Festival and colour scheme.

We have come up with the idea to have the ticket working as a coaster as well as a ticket; to put drinks onto when in the cinema and as a freebie to take home. The ticket will be on the front and the back will used as the coaster. The coaster side will be an illustration made from shapes and designs we have been working on for the logo developments. The 2 in 1 ticket and coaster design will be circular.

Final logo for film festival

This morning, we gathered as a group to look at each others logo designs which to decided which one will be used as the final design for our film festival; 'Overlay Film Festival'.

After presenting and explaining all our ideas to each other, we also got some advice off penny, we decided to use Jake's design as the final logo. We felt that his logo design communicated the quirky aesthetic best as it was made using hand crafted paper and shapes which were then scanned in and edited digitally; the idea that it is handcrafted also represents playfulness. His design was also very similar to mine and Alex's which meant it was that it was easier to agree on a design.

The design works well in black and white as well as colour. For colour we decided to go with red, yellow and orange as it communicates the idea of 'Overlay' as red and yellow creates the orange when overlapped.

Logo design ideas

When experimenting with logo ideas for the Film Festival, I decided to experiment with shape as well as type. I stuck with the idea of using the square and circle but combined them both using overlaying techniques to communicate the title of the Film Festival; 'Overlay'.

I played around with overlaying them in different ways; fitting the shapes within each other, repeated pattern, symmetry, 2 circles 1 square, just circles, just squares etc. I experimented with black and white ideas to start with and then added colour; I chose bold and contrasting colours as they are most appropriate for the quirky, energetic aesthetic of the festival.

I didn't experiment with type as much, as I wanted to keep the logo as abstract and minimal as possible, however I still think the type experiments also worked well. I played with the idea of overlapping the two words 'Over' and 'Lay' in two different colours so when they overlap they create a new colour.

My favourite design is the one of the circle half way overlapped onto the square (second and third row of the first image) as it is sleek and abstract at the same time. I also like the way a third colour is created when overlapping the original colours of the square and circle. It works well in black and white as well as colour which I think is important when creating a logo. I will now discuss my ideas with my group tomorrow as well as looking at what they have come up with.

Studio Brief 2; Start of branding

In our group, we have now started the branding of our brief. We are to brand a film festival which promotes the screening of the films that were recommended to each group last week; The other side of hope, Kids, How to draw a bunny, We live in public, Weekend, Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory, Her and Chefs table. The films were recommended by the designers that we interviewed.

The film festival is created to inspire young graphic designers and artists through films recommended by professional artist's in the industry. We renamed the initial festival name which is "Film Festival for Young Graphic Designers". In order to rename the festival, we needed to come up with ideas and topics that are appropriate.

We started by writing down words and topics that relate to the film festival (personality characteristics) we then narrowed these ideas down to the top few. In the end, we decided that the film festival should be split into two; personality and aesthetic. The personality will be quirky, fun and energetic and the aesthetic will be minimal and sleek.

In order to come up with an appropriate name for the film series, we thought about the purpose and essence of it, in terms of themes. In conclusion, we decided on the name 'Overlay' this came from the idea of the random contrasting selection of films; none of the 8 films linked together or had similar themes. Also, because of the combination of the minimal aesthetic with the quirky personality; overlaying them.

Furthermore, after deciding on the name for the Film Festival we begun to generate ideas for a logotype design. We decided to go with the idea of combining to shapes together to represent the name 'Overlay' and to also communicate the abstract but minimal aesthetic.  The shapes that we chose were a square and a circle. Also, the square and circle can represent the idea of a camera and a lens used for filming.

We decided that we will each experiment with logo ideas tonight using the idea of the square and circle. We will then bring them together for a small critique tomorrow morning to allow us narrow it down to one design.

Some of us also started to plan out and experiment with colour schemes and design ideas for the logotype. We decided that bright and bold contrasting colours are most appropriate for our quirky and fun theme for the Film Festival.

We will also each research into different themes and design ideas to use in order to brand the Film Festival. We have decided that each person will research something different tonight to make the process quicker and more efficient. We have also made a timeplan for the week so we can manage our time well (not finished)

Poster voting

Today me and my group finished our film posters for 'The other side of hope' in order to have a vote on which one to use as a final for screen printing next week. We did the votes by creating a poll for our final posters in a group chat with a short rationale for each idea. Jakes poster was the winner with 5 votes.

Order: Cara, Josh, Brylle, Me, Selina, Jake, Kocha

Poster Refined

This is my final poster design for the film 'The Other Side of Hope', it takes its inspiration from From Forms work as it communicates the same handmade 3D aesthetic that runs throughout their set designs; they make each individual element themselves. I experimented with the composition of the type and decided that the word 'Hope' needed to be bigger for a bolder effect, as the idea of the dog is to represent hope. I chose the colour blue as it represents gloominess and sadness; a theme that runs throughout the film.

The Other Side Of Hope Poster Ideas

We have been set the task in our group to design a poster based on our recommended film by From Form (The Other Side Of Hope). The poster has to be based on the film but inspired by the work of From Form; working in similar ways to them in terms of 3D and 2D, layout, colour, scale etc. However, we cannot use imagery found from the internet, the designs/imagery have to be new and original.

Each person in our group is to design a poster, we will then vote on which poster is best which we will screen print A2 using 2 or more appropriate colours. Today I have started to experiment with ideas for the poster.

The ideas that I have focused on when designing my initial ideas were Khaleds journey from Syria to Finland (using the Finland and Syria map as well as things associated with them the two places in the film), the idea of the dog; the only happy thing in the film which suggests hope and the idea of 3D work inspired by From Form.

This idea takes its references from the idea of Khaleds journey from Syria to Finland; Finland is represented by the dog; one of the only positive moments in the movie, hope. Syria is represented by its map. I created these illustrations using collage which links to the work of From Form in terms of the handmade aesthetic that runs throughout their set designs. The journey illustrations consist of 6 steps; however I have experimented with narrowing it down to 4 or the 2 start and finish pieces. I think this idea works well as an experiment, however it does not communicate From Forms aesthetic enough. The typefaces on Photoshop were a little bit too regular and neat which is why I have chosen to use handwritten text instead.

This idea takes its references from the idea of the dog in Finland. I chose to keep the dog as the main piece of imagery as it symbolises positivity which is something that the film lacks in; showing it in a happy light. The idea of making the dog 3D using origami comes from From Form; they hand make all of their elements for their set designs. I was particularly inspired by the set design they did for 3LAB when exploring origami.

I felt that the idea of the Origami dog worked best, I discussed this idea with Penny and received feedback on how to improve it. The main feedback that I received was to photograph the dog better to create harsher shadows and highlights (creating a light box), to play around with colour and to experiment with the composition of the type. The colour inspiration came from the colours often used in the work of From Form; bright and bold, in particular; the way they used one solid bold colour for the series of images they created for 'The Financial Agenda'.
