Haiku final piece crit and 3 favourites

As a final piece for our haiku we decided to combine all 3 ideas into one video in the right order. When creating the video we used the original hand written sentences and edited them for a more personal feel, also so that it was clearly shown what the original haiku lines were. I think this turned out extremely well and was a success as our piece carried the message well, as well as telling a story that is relatable for all university students.

Throughout the crit we received a wide range of feedback:
- The relax for 'pub with friends' was a favourite.
- The video was quite fast; could of been slower on the images and video so everyone could look at them longer.
- The failure idea could of been presented as a video; someone walking on the road to failure.
- The video had a good narrative, told a story; waking up tired, failing, then going to the pub to relax.
- The images were interesting and pleasing.
- Clearly carries the message, picked out the keywords from each phrase well.
- Kept a good structure.

When watching/looking at the other groups' final pieces, I had 3 particular favourites.
1. The glamourisation of mental health; the balloons popping represented a burst of emotions, I love this meaning behind it. The experimentation was great and looked like a really fun process.

2. The presentation of the pillow with hand written text on, being ripped open. I loved how it started simply with showing the haiku written on the pillows then suddenly it turns into a crazy pillow fight/mess. The slow-mo of the feathers flying everywhere also looked really effective.

3. I loved the stop motion presentation as well (the one with the beer and spiders) the humour in it made the whole thing a lot more fun and enjoyable to watch. It was clear to see what the original haiku was, it also had a nice ending as they showed the credits/who it was staring (each person in the group) this made it more personal and natural.

PPP brief 1 development

As a group we have now begun to develop our first PPP brief ideas (the honesty brief) We have experimented thoroughly with each line and begun to add typographic form into them. We have also brain stormed ideas on how to present the three ideas together as a final piece.

1. Too tired for this day

For the 'too tired for this day' line chose to base it on mornings and the first things we/do see when we wake up and feel tired. We came up with several ideas; Hand stitching the words into a pillow, fogging up a bathroom mirror and writing the words in it, craving into burnt toast, spelling out the words using pipe cleaners in hair to represent bed head, writing it on energy drinks and presenting the words 'too tired' in a digital alarm clock.
These are the ideas that we developed further.

We have chosen to go with the alarm clock idea as it is more original and fun.

2. Pub with friends (how to de-stress)

For the 'pub with friends' line we chose to base it on a real pub scenario and all went to a pub together in order to bring our ideas to life. We wanted to spell out a word that relates to de-stressing using
items found at the pub. We chose to spell out the word 'Relax'.
The objects we used; Straws, bottle tops, bottles, glasses, coasters, our hands and arms holding drinks, peanuts etc.

We have chosen to use the second image as it is clearer to see the word 'Relax' and it is also more interactive and personal as it involves us using our arms.

3. Failure

For the 'failure' line, we gathered a good amount of ideas and then chose to develop our two favourites. Our ideas; Screwed up paper to represent a failed test, letter F stamps in red, combination of red warning and failure objects/symbols, failure written on a street/road sign (road to failure), bad grades etc.

We chose to stick with the chalk on the road idea as it is less digital and looks more like a road leading to failure because of how it is photographed. The street sign idea didn't look as unique and handmade.

We are now refining the presentation of the 3 ideas together as a sequence or a video.

PPP Honesty Brief 1

The first task for PPP was to write down the answers to these 4 questions on separate pieces of paper anonymously;
1.First negative thought today/to mind?
2.What is your current biggest fear?
3.What scares you?
4.How do you de-stress?

We were set this task in order to allow us to then get into groups of 5 and create a haiku/poem from three answers that we all related to. The three that we chose were;
1. Too tired for this day
2. Failure
3. Pub with friends

We chose these ones as we all felt like they were all different, but all so relatable in terms of university and how it has made us feel so far. All of them being quite different allows us to have a wide range of ideas and contrast which makes it fun. We now have to develop and bring our haiku to life. Create a physical typographic/experimental idea relating to each of the three. We have begun to gather some interesting ideas.

Time management

I have created a timetable for the next two weeks which will allow me to stay organised and prioritise certain tasks each week, this will help my weeks run smoothly and stress free. My timetable includes my university sessions as well as time to socialise and work at home, I think it is important to have a good balance. I will continue to create a timetable each week and hang it in my room.

Finding letter forms in Leeds

I was set the brief to explore Leeds and find interesting letter forms and typography. We were to find typography that was urban and found rather than typography of chain brands e.g. Topshop. I thoroughly enjoyed this task as I love to photograph things that I find interesting, I also found humour in a lot of the images that I took.

This task was set with the intention of me choosing my 2 favourite images to publish onto Typesetting.co.uk.

The last 2 photographs are the ones that I have chosen to publish. I chose to publish these two images as I think that they are both very unusual but quirky at the same time; not something you would see everyday on the high street, both were found down small isolated alley ways. I love the first photograph as I have a huge love for graffiti and street art, I also chose it because of the term that is used 'blud' (meaning friend). I found the second piece interesting as it suggests that using technology (an android phone) may make you paranoid; on social media everyone has access to see what you are doing, who you're friends with, etc. I feel that both photographs represent Leeds in different ways.
